Pendant Lighting: How low should you go?

May 23, 2022

Do you get frustrated when you see pendant lighting that's hanging too high or too low?

We all have a slightly different sensibility about the correct height, so there's really no right or wrong. It's relevant to the space, or even if you have tall people in your household. But here are some general rules of thumb to help guide you.

I feel that over dining tables, go as low as you dare (unless you have a drop-dead view to consider) because you can appreciate this lighting at a seated position. It also clearly delineates a space for food, wine and chat.

Over kitchen islands, you mustn't be looking straight at the pendants. Your eye line should skim them. Hanging too high looks like your trousers are too short and leaves you feeling like tugging them down a notch!

When walking underneath pendants, you don't want to feel like you are being attacked. It's also dangerous for taller folks.

And finally, if you have a vast space above with a high ceiling, the measurements can change to allow for scale.

While there are no hard and fast rules for placement, here are a few images with average heights to help guide you.
